About this material
Neem leaf is the dried leaflet of Azadirachta indica. Colour is the visible mark of how it was handled: shade-dried leaf holds a deep green, while sun-dried leaf goes olive and then khaki, and once it is khaki the buyer can no longer tell young leaf from old. Leaflets are curved and sickle-shaped with a coarsely toothed margin and a strongly asymmetric base. They are stripped from the rachis before drying, because the midrib and stalk are woody and mill poorly. The taste is markedly bitter and persists.
Also called
Neem, Nimba, Vepa
Traditional use: Traditionally used in Ayurvedic preparations and in household practice.
