About this material
Kalmegh is the whole herb of Andrographis paniculata, cut when the plant comes into flower, which is when the leaf is at its heaviest relative to stem. The material is intensely bitter in every part, and that bitterness is the working identity check: a fragment of genuine leaf is unmistakable and unpleasant within a second or two. Leaves are lance-shaped, thin and dark green, borne on distinctly four-angled stems that stay square in section after drying. Extract-grade material is graded for leaf content, since stem contributes weight rather than yield.
Also called
Kalmegh, King of Bitters, Nilavembu
Traditional use: Traditionally used in Ayurvedic and Siddha preparations.
