About this material
Akarkara is the dried root of Anacyclus pyrethrum, imported from Iranian sources where the material runs larger and more uniform than local substitutes. It is identified as much by taste as by appearance: a fragment held on the tongue produces a strong tingling and a marked flow of saliva within seconds, and material that does not do this is not Akarkara. The root is cylindrical, greyish-brown and faintly wrinkled lengthwise, with a darker cortex around a paler central column. Substitution is common in this line, so each consignment is checked against a retained reference sample.
Also called
Akarkara, Pellitory Root, Aqarqarha
Traditional use: Traditionally used in Unani and Ayurvedic preparations.
